Blessed Franz Jagerstatter 1907 - 1943 Feast day: May 21 Patronage: Conscientious objectors
In 1938, Hitler's army occupied Austria and ordered all men to enlist in the military. Franz, a farmer, and father of four, refused to fight in Hitler's army, knowing that he would face execution. His neighbors, pastor and even the bishop tried to convince Franz to enlist for the sake of his family. But Franz felt his faith and conscience compelled him to follow the teachings of God and not the decrees of the Third Reich. He was executed in 1943 at the age of 36.

Text
"Consider how often you have the chance to stand strong and say no to temptations of the flesh, to gossiping, to mistreating others, to defrauding your boss through shirking your work. And then consider how often you yield and say yes. You are not facing death, but you betray your principles perhaps out of fear of ridicule or a blow to your pride or a missed chance to be thought clever, or simply sloth, greed, envy, or anger. So often men are measured by their willingness to fight physically, but Blessed Franz Jagetstatter fought the spiritual battle and won the crown of martyrdom and heaven through his fidelity to God and the still, small voice of conscience that God had placed in him. Listen to your conscience and learn to say 'no' when you should with Blessed Franz Jagerstatter."
-Bishop Thomas J Olmsted, Manual For Men

The faith of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, the Austrian who was executed for refusing to take the Hitler Oath or fight for the nazis, blows me away. At different times both his priest and his bishop tried to get him to change his mind and join, but he refused. He had a wife and three young children. All his neighbors regarded him as a failure of a husband and a father.

Nagasaki, WW2 martyrs, conscientious objectors remembered
Nagasaki atomic bomb victims were among those remembered on Tuesday at a prayer service in the Crypt Chapel of Westminster Cathedral. Besides marking the anniversary of  Nagasaki’s victims, the service also recalled the execution of Blessed Franz Jagerstatter in 1943 for refusing to serve in Hitler’s army, and included prayers for all conscientious objectors and those who work for peace.…
